Product details

Ferrosilicon is an ferro alloy composed of iron and silicon, which is an iron and silicon alloy made from coke, steel chips, and quartz (or silica) as raw materials and smelted by electric furnace. Ferro silicon lumps is often used as a deoxidiser in the steelmaking industry, and because SiO2 gives off a lot of heat when it is generated, it is also beneficial to raise the temperature of steel while deoxidising. Ferrosilicon can also be used as an alloying agent, widely used in low alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel.

Specification of Ferrosilicon

According to different smelting methods, ferrosilicon can be divided into four categories: ordinary ferrosilicon (PG), high silicon ferrosilicon (GG), low aluminum ferrosilicon (DL) and high purity ferrosilicon (GC). Low aluminum ferrosilicon 75, ferrosilicon 75, ferrosilicon 72 and ferrosilicon 65 are widely used in the steelmaking and foundry industries.

Chemical Industry

1. Used as deoxidizer and alloying agent in the steelmaking industry.

Silicon and oxygen have a strong chemical affinity, so ferrosilicon is a strong deoxidizer for steelmaking and is used for precipitation and diffusion deoxidation. Adding a certain amount of silicon to steel can significantly improve the strength, hardness and elasticity of the steel. Ferrosilicon not only meets the deoxidation requirements of steelmaking, but also has desulfurization performance and has the advantages of large specific gravity and strong penetrating power.

In addition, in the steelmaking industry, ferrosilicon powder is often used as a heating agent for steel ingot caps to improve the quality and recovery rate of steel ingots by taking advantage of the fact that ferrosilicon powder can release a large amount of heat when burned at high temperatures.

2. Used as inoculant and spheroidizing agent in the cast iron industry.

Adding a certain amount of ferrosilicon to cast iron can prevent the formation of carbides in the iron and promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite.

3. Used as reducing agent in ferroalloy production.

High-silicon ferrosilicon (or silicon alloy) is a commonly used reducing agent in the ferroalloy industry when producing low-carbon ferroalloys.

4. 75# ferrosilicon is often used in the high-temperature smelting process of metallic magnesium in the Pidgeon process to replace the magnesium in CaO.MgO. About 1.2 tons of ferrosilicon are consumed for every ton of metallic magnesium produced.

5. Ground or atomized ferrosilicon powder can be used as a suspended phase in the mineral processing industry.

6. It can be used as a coating for welding rods in the welding rod manufacturing industry.

7. High-silicon ferrosilicon is used in the chemical industry to make products such as silicone.

Among these uses, the steelmaking industry, foundry industry and ferroalloy industry are the largest users of ferrosilicon. Together they consume more than 90% of ferrosilicon. Among various brands of ferrosilicon, 75% ferrosilicon is currently the most widely used. In the steelmaking industry, approximately 3-5kg of 75% ferrosilicon is consumed for each ton of steel produced.

Ferrosilicon Production

Ferro silicon is made from coke, steel scraps, and quartz (or silica) as raw materials and smelted in an electric furnace. When refining ferro silicon traditionally, silicon is reduced from silica containing SIO2. Most of the smelting of ferro silicon uses metallurgical coke as the reducing agent, and steel scraps are the regulator of ferrosilicon.

The produced ferrosilicon is generally reprocessed into fesi blocks, fesi granules and fesi powder.

Ferrosilicon Industry development status

The world's main ferrosilicon alloy producing and exporting countries include China, Russia, Ukraine, Brazil and Norway.

China is not only a major producer of ferrosilicon in the world, but also a major exporter of ferrosilicon. In 2022, my country's ferrosilicon exports will reach 43,000 tons. China's ferrosilicon is mainly sold to Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam and other Asian countries and regions. Among them, the largest amount of ferrosilicon is sold to Japan, followed by South Korea and Indonesia.
